Byproducts

open through August 28th 2011 at FICTILIS

This exhibition features a collection of large backing boards used by one local signmaker over the course of several years. The boards have acquired layers of vividly colored paint and masking which has peeled off to reveal earlier paint layers. Bold colors swathes are interrupted by ghostly outlines of letters,  suggestions of shapes, and nebulous dustings of overspray. Modern artists work hard to contrive the kind of chance operations that these pieces authentically embody. This exhibit represents a body of work – a collection of accidental masterpieces. (See them all here.)

The exhibit also features byproduct-related work by several friends of FICTILIS including a Glowing Sushi Cooking video/display from Zack Denfeld, Filiform, a piece made of reclaimed roofing shingles by Michelle de la Vega, three years worth of musical byproducts by David Kanaga, knife-making scraps from Alex Blue, and a collection of unpaid parking tickets by Seattle artist Graham Downing.
