internship

Fictilis has occasional internship openings for the right person.  The current application deadline is May 12, 2011 for part-time, flexibly scheduled internship between months of June-August 2011, 10-15 hrs/wk depending on skillset of applicant.

This internship is geared toward students of art and design, art history, museology, interior or theater set design, or students considering a career in art that involves working in/with galleries or other institutions that situate art within society via creative curatorial practices. Non-students will also be considered.

Position is unpaid, but intern is compensated with studio space for their own work, access to on-site tools, materials, and other resources, paid utilities, etc. Intern will gain real-world experience bringing art installations and exhibitions from idea to opening night in a gallery located in the heart of Seattle’s Artwalk studio/gallery district. This includes experience in curatorial practices, retail and gallery/museum display and construction, creative group collaboration, event organizing and marketing, and general operations of an art studio/gallery. Intern will have the opportunity to conceive and execute several self-contained installations and displays as part of regular exhibits. Additonally, during the final month of the internship, intern will have the opportunity to curate, organize, and install their own full-gallery show.

We will work with successful applicant to help tailor the position to their interests and learning requirements, or we will work with a student’s department to enable course credit for the internship.

Requirements:
enthusiasm for art and experimentation

Preferred:
basic graphic design skills (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
some web design experience (especially WordPress)
basic physical fitness, ability to lift 40 lbs comfortably

Responsibilities (flexible):
assist with setup/takedown of window displays and periodically scheduled shows/events/installations
assist with planning and organization of occasional events
assist with publicity and documentation of events (print, web)
